Measure Your TikTok Video Performance the Right Way

TikTok works differently than other platforms. Your content gets pushed to people who have never heard of you through the For You Page. That means measuring engagement against follower count makes no sense. This calculator uses views as the denominator because that is what actually matters on TikTok.

The formula is (Likes + Comments + Shares) / Views x 100. If your video gets 50,000 views, 3,000 likes, 200 comments, and 100 shares, your engagement rate is 6.6%. That puts you in excellent territory. Shares carry extra weight in the algorithm, so a high share count is a strong signal your content is hitting.

Here is how to read your numbers. Under 3% means your content is getting seen but not resonating. 3-6% is solid performance. 6-10% is excellent and suggests your content is connecting with viewers. Above 10% is viral territory - the algorithm is pushing your video hard.

Unlike Instagram where rates drop as you grow, TikTok engagement can stay high at any account size. A video from an account with 50 followers can hit the same 8% rate as one from an account with 5 million. The algorithm cares about content quality, not your follower count.

Brands looking at TikTok creators focus on average engagement rate across recent videos. One viral video is great, but consistent 5-7% engagement across your last 20 posts shows you know how to create content that connects. Track your rate monthly to spot trends in what works.

Frequently Asked Questions

A TikTok engagement rate of 6-10% is excellent. Viral videos often exceed 10%. Rates of 3-6% are considered good, while under 3% is average.
TikTok's For You Page shows content to non-followers, so views are a more accurate measure of reach than follower count.
Saves (bookmarks) are a strong signal to the algorithm but aren't publicly visible, so they're not included in this calculation.
Tap the three dots on your video, then select Analytics to see views, likes, comments, and shares.
The formula is (Likes + Comments + Shares) / Views x 100. This view-based calculation reflects how TikTok distributes content to non-followers through the For You Page.
TikTok measures engagement against views, while Instagram uses followers. Since TikTok shows your content to people who do not follow you, engaged viewers make up a larger percentage of your total views.
Watch time does not appear in the engagement rate formula, but it is the most important metric for the TikTok algorithm. High watch time gets you more views, which then generate more engagement opportunities.
Hook viewers in the first second, keep videos under 30 seconds for higher completion rates, ask questions in your captions, and reply to comments to encourage conversation.
