TikTok is vertical-first, full stop. The entire platform is built around 9:16 content that fills your phone screen. Content in any other format will have black bars, look awkward, and underperform. Plan for vertical from the start.
The standard dimensions are 1080 x 1920 pixels at 9:16 aspect ratio. This matches Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook Stories, so you can repurpose content easily. What works on one platform visually works on all of them.
TikTok compresses everything heavily during upload. Recording at 4K might seem smart, but you are wasting file size since TikTok downgrades it anyway. 1080p at 30fps is plenty. If you want smoother motion, bump to 60fps.
Photo carousels (TikTok photo mode) have become popular for certain content types like recipes, outfit grids, and before/after reveals. Each image should be 1080 x 1920 pixels. You can include up to 35 photos per post.
Profile pictures are simple at 200 x 200 pixels minimum, displayed as circles. Since they appear small throughout the app, use a clear, recognizable image. Complex logos or distant shots will not read well.
The cover image for your video can be selected from any frame or uploaded separately. If uploading, use 1080 x 1920 pixels. A good cover encourages clicks on your profile grid.
