1080x1080 works everywhere and looks great in the grid.
4:5 ratio (1080x1350) takes up more room in the feed.
1080x1920 (9:16) works for both Stories and Reels.
It displays as a small circle - avoid text and complex details.

Getting your Instagram image sizes right can make or break your content. An image that looks perfect on your phone might get cropped awkwardly in the feed, or a Story that seemed sharp becomes pixelated when viewed by your followers. Knowing the exact pixel dimensions for each format eliminates these headaches.
Instagram supports three main aspect ratios for feed posts: square at 1:1 (1080 x 1080 pixels), portrait at 4:5 (1080 x 1350 pixels), and landscape at 1.91:1 (1080 x 566 pixels). Portrait images take up the most real estate in the feed, which is why many creators prefer them for maximum visibility. Square remains the safest choice since it looks consistent in both the feed and your profile grid.
Stories and Reels share the same dimensions: 1080 x 1920 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio. This full-screen vertical format means you need to design differently than feed posts. Keep text and important elements away from the top 250 pixels (where the username displays) and bottom 200 pixels (where the message bar appears).
Carousels follow the same rules as single-image posts, but every image in the carousel must match the same aspect ratio. If your first image is portrait, all following slides need to be portrait too. This consistency is enforced by Instagram, so plan your carousel dimensions before you start creating.
Profile pictures display at just 110 pixels on mobile, but Instagram recommends uploading at 320 x 320 pixels minimum. Since profiles show as circles, avoid putting important details near the edges where they will be cropped off. Keep your logo or face centered.
