Threads inherited some formatting quirks from its Meta roots. Like Instagram, it tends to strip extra whitespace when you paste text from other apps. You write a post with clear paragraphs, and it collapses into a dense block that nobody wants to read.
The fix is adding zero-width space characters after each line break. These Unicode characters (U+200B) are invisible but signal to Threads that there is content between paragraphs. The platform keeps your formatting because it cannot tell the difference between real text and these invisible markers.
Threads caps posts at 500 characters, so your formatting needs to be efficient. The zero-width spaces add negligible overhead while making your posts significantly more readable. Short paragraphs with breathing room perform better than cramped walls of text.
Cross-posting between Threads and other platforms works better with this tool. Instagram, Bluesky, and Twitter all have different whitespace handling. Text formatted with zero-width spaces tends to survive the transition to most platforms without additional tweaking.
