Twitter/X Image Sizes: The Complete 2026 Guide

Twitter (now X) handles images differently than most platforms. The timeline crops images unpredictably, and what displays depends on whether someone is viewing on mobile, desktop, or the app. Getting your sizes right means your images actually display the way you intended.

For single-image tweets, 1200 x 675 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio) is your best bet. This ratio expands fully in the timeline without cropping. If you are posting a link with a preview card, use 1200 x 628 pixels (1.91:1) to match the Twitter Card format.

The header banner sits at 1500 x 500 pixels with a 3:1 aspect ratio. But there is a catch: your profile picture overlaps the bottom-left corner. Design your banner assuming that roughly a 120-pixel square in that corner will be covered. Keep important text and logos elsewhere.

Multi-image tweets get complex. Twitter crops multiple images into a grid layout that varies based on how many you attach. Two images become side-by-side squares. Three become one large image plus two smaller ones. Four become a 2x2 grid. Design with these crop zones in mind.

Profile pictures are straightforward: 400 x 400 pixels, displayed as circles. Like other platforms, avoid putting important details near the edges since they will be cropped into the circular shape.

Twitter accepts images up to 5MB for standard accounts. Animated GIFs also cap at 5MB. For best quality, upload PNG for graphics with hard edges and text, JPG for photographs.

Key Features:

  • Single and multi-image tweet dimensions
  • Twitter Card preview image sizing
  • Header banner with profile overlap zones
  • Profile picture circle crop guidelines
  • File size limits and format recommendations
  • Desktop vs mobile display differences

Frequently Asked Questions

For single images in tweets, 1200 x 675 pixels (16:9) displays fully expanded. For Twitter Cards and link previews, use 1200 x 628 (1.91:1).
Twitter profile pictures should be 400 x 400 pixels. They display as circles throughout the platform.
Twitter headers should be 1500 x 500 pixels (3:1 aspect ratio). The profile picture overlaps the bottom-left area.
Twitter accepts images up to 5MB for JPG/PNG. Animated GIFs can also be up to 5MB.
When posting multiple images, Twitter crops them differently. Two images display as 700x700 each, three images as one large (700x700) and two small (350x350), four images as 350x350 each.
Premium subscribers can post images up to 4096x4096 pixels, compared to the standard 4096x4096 limit. The main benefit is longer videos, not image dimensions.
Fleets used 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16) like Stories on other platforms. If Twitter brings back a similar feature, expect the same vertical format.
Your header is 1500 x 500 pixels, but the profile picture covers roughly 120 pixels of the bottom-left corner. Keep text and important elements to the right and center areas.
