Twitter (now X) handles images differently than most platforms. The timeline crops images unpredictably, and what displays depends on whether someone is viewing on mobile, desktop, or the app. Getting your sizes right means your images actually display the way you intended.
For single-image tweets, 1200 x 675 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio) is your best bet. This ratio expands fully in the timeline without cropping. If you are posting a link with a preview card, use 1200 x 628 pixels (1.91:1) to match the Twitter Card format.
The header banner sits at 1500 x 500 pixels with a 3:1 aspect ratio. But there is a catch: your profile picture overlaps the bottom-left corner. Design your banner assuming that roughly a 120-pixel square in that corner will be covered. Keep important text and logos elsewhere.
Multi-image tweets get complex. Twitter crops multiple images into a grid layout that varies based on how many you attach. Two images become side-by-side squares. Three become one large image plus two smaller ones. Four become a 2x2 grid. Design with these crop zones in mind.
Profile pictures are straightforward: 400 x 400 pixels, displayed as circles. Like other platforms, avoid putting important details near the edges since they will be cropped into the circular shape.
Twitter accepts images up to 5MB for standard accounts. Animated GIFs also cap at 5MB. For best quality, upload PNG for graphics with hard edges and text, JPG for photographs.
